The pump is still making things difficult. There is no way of adjusting the waterflow, and I have nightmares of stuff overflowing. I created this gizmo the other day - this allows me to quite precisely control the waterintake:
It is quite simple - the larger hose can be pulled back and forth, the number of holes it covers decides the intake - simple (free) but it works :-)
